Cartier Santos Galbée
Cartier Santos Galbée
The Cartier Santos is an icon, first created by Louis Cartier for his friend Albert Santos-Dumont in 1904, it is one of the earliest men's wristwatches to be popularized in society. Albert Santos was a Brazilian aviator, and was also a "celebrity" in the early 20th century. Back then, wristwatches were mostly worn by women, and men would still use a pocket watch. This changed when Louis Cartier created the "Santos" for his friend Albert. The Santos was sleek, masculine, and utilitarian, which was the perfect contrast from the dainty jewelry like ladies' watches. Albert's fans quickly noticed his Cartier watch, and thus the market for men's wrist watches began.
This Santos is part of the subcollection "Galbée", meaning "curved" in French. The Santos Galbée features more curvature to the case than the regular Santos, allowing it to fit incredibly well to the curvature of your wrist. This example is one of the rare automatic Galbées, with a beautiful guilloche dial to compliment the two-tone case. This watch is in great condition, with very light scratches on the 18k gold bezel and on parts of the bracelet.
